Trend of Benzene Concentration in Air of Newly Decorated Rooms

    • Objectives To investigate the variation of benzene concentration in indoor air after being decorated.
The degree of contamination were detected in the air of rooms with low and high decorated levels according to the extent of decoration, the fullness of rooms with furniture, and room areas of 80, 110 and 142 square meters. The concentration of benzene in indoor air was measured according to the Code for Indoor Environmental Pollution Control of Civil Building Engineering (GB 50325-2006), and the desorbed solvents were detected by gas chromatography.
Results The average benzene concentration in different room areas was in the range of 0.16~0.34 mg/m3. The concentration of benzene in indoor air of low decorated rooms was below the national limit in the 1st to 5th detection, while the concentration of benzene in indoor air of high decorated rooms and rooms filled with furniture was lower than the national limit until 98 days and 118 days later, respectively.
Conclusions Benzene concentration in indoor air was decreased with the extension of time, and reached to a safe level in118 days.
