Rural Sanitation Status in Jiangxi Province in 2011

    • Objectives  To understand and analyze the status of rural sanitation in Jiangxi Province in 2011, in order to provide a scientific basis for the development of policies and measures for relevant government departments.
Methods  The basic sanitation status on garbage, sewage, toilet, pathogenic bio-organism, heavy metals in soil and other environmental health issues in 2808 households from 560 administrative villages of 28 counties in Jiangxi Province was obtained by consulting reference materials, interviewing people, on-the-spot observing and laboratory testing.
Results  Rural population accounted for 80.07% of total population in the 28 project counties. The rate of drinking water from centralized supply was 32.46%. The popularization rate of sanitary-latrine was 68.70%, which was 47.38% higher than 21.32% in 2006.Most of sanitary-latrines were in a "three format", which accounted for 28.20%. The households without toilet accounted for 3.51%. The population coverage rate for garbage disposal was 26.68%; and for sewage treatment was 22.09%.
Conclusions  The proportion of drinking water from centralized water supply and the popularization of rural sanitary latrines have greatly improved since 2006 in the rural areas of Jiangxi province. The number of household without toilet was less, but the population coverage rate for garbage disposal and sewage treatment remained low. The infrastructure of rural sanitation in Jiangxi province is still relatively deficient. There are still present certain environmental hazards and risks of intestinal infectious disease.
