Objectives To assess carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of benzene and formaldehyde in environmental air of control rooms.
Methods The concentration of benzene and formaldehyde in indoor air was detected in 26 control rooms, and human health was evaluated according to the health risk assessment method of the Environmental Protection Bureau of USA.
Results The concentration of benzene and formaldehyde in indoor air in all control rooms was lower than the limits of the Chinese indoor air quality standard except in 4 control rooms. The carcinogenic risks of benzene and formaldehyde for male workers were 3.34×10-6 and 20.38×10-6, respectively, which were higher than the safe range of 1.00×10-6.The carcinogenic risks for the female were lower than the male. However, the carcinogenic risks of benzene and formaldehyde in these control rooms were lower than other reports. The non-carcinogenic risks of benzene and formaldehyde in these control rooms were low.
Conclusions The carcinogenic risks of benzene and formaldehyde in these control rooms were acceptable, and the non-carcinogenic risks were negligible.
