    Urine Iodine of School-aged Children in Mianyang in 2009-2011

    • Objectives To investigate the iodine level of school-aged children in Mianyang and to provide scientific evidence for the prevention and control of iodine deficiency disorders.
      Methods Urine samples of children in 9 county of Mianyang were collected and iodine was detected by arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometry (WS/T107-2006) in 2009-2011.
      Results A total of 2 234 urine samples were detected; the median of urine iodine level was 276 μg/L. The content of urine iodine less than 50 μg/L was in 53 samples which accounted for 2.37%, and the content of urine iodine less than 100 μg/L was in 225 samples which accounted for 10.07%. There were no statistical difference among years, counties, ages and sex (P less than 0.05).
      Conclusions The iodine nutritional status of school-aged children in Mianyang was well, it has reached the national standard criteria for iodine deficiency disorders being eliminated. It is still necessary to strengthen the dynamics of monitoring and health promotion, and to supply iodine scientifically.
