Investigation on Iodine Level of Drinking Water in Dangyang

    • Objectives To investigate iodine level of drinking water in Dangyang, to provide scientific basis for prevention and control strategies.
Methods Drinking water samples were collected from centralized and decentralized water supplies, and the level of iodine in drinking water was determined by arsenic-cerium catalytic method.
Results The range of iodine level was 0~143 μg/L, the mean value was 21.9 μg/L, and the median value was 9.3 μg/L in 297 water samples. The iodine content in 8 water samples was more than 100 μg/L.
Conclusions According to the standard delimitation for the endemic area of iodine deficiency disorder and iodine deficiency, the water source for more than half of residents in Dangyang city was deficient in iodine. On the other hand, the iodine content in a small number of water samples was high, which was closed to a high iodine area.Monitoring the iodine level in water source should be strengthened in these areas.
