A Survey on Hand Hygiene Awareness in Medical Staffs of a Grade-three General Hospital in Xinjiang Construction Corps

Objectives  To provide basis for hand hygiene management in primary hospitals, to reduce nosocomial infections, and to understand the factors influencing the implementation of hand hygiene in general hospitals of Xinjiang construction corps.

Methods Stratified cluster sampling method was used to select subjects, a self-made questionnaire "the awareness of hand hygiene in medical staffs" was used for investigation and analysis in representative departments of the hospital.

Results The cognition score on the knowledge of hand hygiene indicators in internal medicine staffs (13.44±0.20) was better than that in surgical staffs (13.26±0.16).The awareness score of knowledge associated with hand hygiene in females was higher than that in males (χ²=5.699; P=0.017, P < 0.05); the score in internal medicine staffs was also higher than that in surgical staffs (χ ²=5.877; P=0.015, P < 0.05).

Conclusions The degree of cognition on hand hygiene among medical personnel was high, but the rate of implementing hand-washing was low. Executing supervision and training on hand hygiene in hospitals should be strengthened. Improving facilities for hand washing and implementing the management with both reward and punishment should be enforced to improve the compliance.
