Pollution characteristics and sources apportionment of PAHs in PM2.5 in Jinan, China, 2021

    • Objective To analyze the pollution characteristics and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Jinan, China, 2021, and to provide relevant data support for the comprehensive management of Jinan's atmospheric environment.
Methods According to the regional distribution characteristics of Jinan city, two representative monitoring sites were selected for continuous monitoring from 10th to 16th of each month. The ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph was used to detect 16 PAHs species, analyze the change trend and characteristics of PAHs in PM2.5 in Jinan City, and use the feature ratio and PMF model to conduct source apportionment for PAHs in PM2.5.
Results PAHs were mainly tetracyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and hexacyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, showed had a significant seasonal variation trend, that is, winter>autumn>spring>summer; with the pollution situation being particularly condition was especially prominent in January. In autumn and winter, the proportion of seven kinds of PAHs with high carcinogenic risk was higher than that in other seasons. The mass concentration of PAHs in all seasons in Licheng District was higher than that in the Shizhong District. According to the analysis of PAHs sources by characteristic ratio and PMF, the main pollution sources in winter are volatile sources of industrial and petroleum products and traffic sources. Autumn is mainly for coal combustion sources, industrial and petroleum products volatile sources and transportation sources.
Conclusion There is certain pollution of PAHs in PM2.5 in Jinan, so it is necessary to increase the use of clean energy. At the same time, further strengthen the control of coal combustion, industrial and petroleum products volatilization and traffic pollution sources in autumn and winter, especially in heating season.
