An investigation on the use of urea-reducing agents in swimming venues in Luohu district of Shenzhen, China

    • Objective To investigate the use of urea-reducing agents in various swimming venues in Luohu district of Shenzhen, China, and to explore the influence of this new water-purifying agent on the health of swimmers.
Methods In 2019-2021, 119 swimming venues with relatively large number swimmers in this district were selected for investigation, and field personnel investigated the persons in charge (about the frequency of changing the water and the use of urea-reducing agents) and collected water samples to obtain the baseline data of urea and ammonia nitrogen in water for health statistics.
Results A total of 119 swimming pool water samples were collected, and the qualification rates of urea and ammonia nitrogen were 81.51% and 46.22%, respectively. A total of 98 swimming venues used urea-reducing agents, accounting for 82.35%.
Conclusion There is a relatively high rate of use of urea-reducing agents in swimming venues in Luohu district of Shenzhen, and the more frequency of using urea-reducing agents, the higher mass concentration of ammonia nitrogen. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the control of water quality monitoring in swimming venues within the jurisdiction.
