Awareness of the Basic Knowledge of COVID-19 and Disinfection and Sterilization Methods among Medical Workers in a Municipal Hospital of Lanzhou, China

    • Objective To investigate the awareness of the basic knowledge of COVID-19 and the knowledge of disinfection and sterilization methods among medical workers in a municipal designated hospital for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Lanzhou, China.
Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among the medical workers in a municipal designated hospital for COVID-19 in Lanzhou to investigate the awareness of the basic knowledge of COVID-19 and disinfection and sterilization methods, and awareness rate was compared between medical workers from different posts and different departments.
Results A total of 1 248 questionnaires were collected, with 1 243 usable questionnaires, and the overall awareness rate of relevant knowledge was above 97% among the respondents. The medical workers engaged in nursing, medical treatment, medical technology, and other posts had lower awareness rates of specimen collection, transportation, storage, and test management and terminal disinfection of specific places than other problems. As for the 10 departments including Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Surgery, and Department of Medical Technology, the medical workers in Department of Surgery and General Ward had a relatively low awareness rate of the classification of COVID-19 and the collection, transportation, storage, and test management of specimens (< 97%). There was a significant difference in the awareness rate of the definition of COVID-19 cluster epidemic between different departments (χ2 = 15.14, P = 0.028).
Conclusion There is a relatively high awareness rate of the basic knowledge of COVID-19 and disinfection and sterilization methods among medical workers in a municipal designated hospital for COVID-19 in Lanzhou, but the awareness rate of disinfection and sterilization methods needs to be further increased among the medical workers engaged in medical technology.
