Objective To establish and evaluate a rapid auto-colorimetric method for detecting aluminum in drinking water.
Methods Based on the national standard method for aluminum detection, a methed is established by improving the form of reagents, simplifying the process of operation; investigating the measurable range, precision and accuracy; and detecting samples.
Results The standard curve was linear in the range of 0.008~0.20 mg/L; the correlation coefficient was 0.9995; the detection limit of the method was 0.006 mg/L; RSD was 0.42%~2.60%; the recovery was 87.5%~102% in detecting aluminum in tap water. The results of aluminum in quality control samples were in the range of standard setting values and the relative error were 0.46%~4.15%. The results of samples detected by this method were consistent with those detected by the national standard method.
Conclusions The new auto-colorimetric method for detecting aluminum in drinking water was fast, accurate and with high precision. The reagent used in this method was not necessary to be prepared by operators personally and a small amount of reagent and sample was required in each detection. So it is a method of saving and protecting environment, and is suitable for using in the laboratory of centralized water unit in villages and towns for water quality control.
