High-risk Behavior of Brucellosis Patients in Qinghai Three River Fountainhead Area

    • Objective To investigate the relationship between the high-risk behavior of herdsmen in the Three River Fountainhead area in Qinghai province, and to provide scientific evidence for further prevention and intervention.
Methods A 1: 4 case-control study was carried out in 9 counties and 1 town of the Three River Fountainhead area; using 564 healthy controls to match with 141 brucellosis patients. The risk factors for the incidence of brucellosis were collected through questionnaire and analyzed by 1: 4 conditional logistic regression analysis; by using EXCEL to set up database and using SPSS 17.0 for statistical analysis of data.
Results The high-risk behavior habits related to the incidence of brucellosis in brucellosis patients in Three River Fountainhead area were eating undercooked meat, sharing common articles in daily life with livestock, drinking raw milk, not regular cleaning the living environment, with trauma on hand, mixed residency with animals, lack of personal protection, personal disinfection, and the knowledge on brucellosis prevention. Most of aborted and dead livestock were processed or sold, and most of sick livestock were disposed in a manner of selling out. Three suspicious risk factors including mixed living of people with animals, lack of personal protection and eating undercooked meat were obtained from single factor Logistic analysis. All 3 risk factors were different statistically between the patients and the control subjects in different gender, age, ethnic and occupation groups by χ2 analysis, except the factor of mixed living of people with animals in different gender groups. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed a direct relationship of 3 suspicious factors with people suffered from brucellosis.
Conclusions The knowledge of brucellosis prevention in the herdsmen in Three River Fountainhead area who engaged in high-risk behavior and taking less protective measures should be improved; the knowledge of health promotion and behavior intervention should be strengthened.
