Objectives To investigate the operation and management of direct drinking water in schools at Dongcheng district of Beijing, in order to provide scientific data for making policy decisions in the management of drinking water in schools.
Methods A self-designed questionnaire survey was performed for the management of drinking fountain in schools and the results were analyzed statistically.
Results In 65 schools providing drinking water for students in Dongcheng district, only 18 schools have been tested by CDC in 2013, accounting for 28%.Only 35% of schools had completed health records for their drinking water equipment. In 42% of schools no special personnel has been assigned to manage the drinking water equipment. The licenses of drinking water equipment were expired in 23% of schools. There was no filter replacement record in 62% of schools and more than half of schools could not provide maintaining and cleaning records.
Conclusions There are loopholes in the operation and management of direct drinking water at schools in Dongcheng district, Beijing, further strengthening the management is needed.
