Health Risk Assessment for Heavy Metals in Rural Drinking Water in Shijiazhuang City

      Abstract:
Objectives  To assess the health risk for heavy metals in drinking water in the rural areas of Shijiazhuang city.
Methods Water samples were collected from the treated groundwater of 245 village waterworks in 10 counties of Shijiazhuang city and were tested during dry and wet season in 2012. The health risk assessment model recommended by the U.S. environmental protection agency (USEPA) was used to assess the health risk caused by heavy metals, such as As, Cd, Cr, Pb and Hg in drinking water.
Results The annual total health risk caused by three gene toxic substances for individuals was 8.44×10-5, which exceeded the maximum tolerable value recommended by international commission on radiological protection (ICRP, 5.0×10-5/y). The annual health risk for individuals caused by Pb (8.50×10-10/y) was higher than Hg(5.0×10-5/y) but lower than the maximum tolerable value recommended by ICRP (5.0×10-5/y).
Conclusions The chromium level in drinking water at partial monitored spots might have some health risks.
