Relationship between Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Meta-Analysis

      Abstract:
Objective To evaluate the relationship between polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) via Meta-analysis.
Methods Chinese databases such as Wanfang Data, CNKI, VIP, and SinoMed, and English databases such as PubMed, OVID, Research Gate, and Cochrane databases were searched for the observational studies on the relationship between PBDEs and T2DM. After literature screening, data extraction, and quality evaluation, RevMan5.3 software was used for Meta-analysis.
Results A total of 7 eligible studies with 1276 cases and 5135 controls were included. The Meta-analysis showed that exposure to PBDEs was related with the risk of T2DM (OR=1.47, 95% CI:1.16-1.85, P < 0.05). The homologues of PBDEs were analyzed separately, and the result showed that BDE-47 was related with the risk of T2DM(OR=1.52, 95%CI:1.08-2.14, P < 0.05), while BDE-99, BDE-153, and BDE-183 were not related with the risk of T2DM.
Conclusion PBDEs exposure is likely to be a risk factor for T2DM, but their etiological link still needs to be confirmed by further high-quality research.
